Writing my first paper...

Hi mates! The following text is what I have written for my paper up to now. I will really appreciate your comments on it!

“The Picture of Dorian Gray” & immortality.

Introduction:

Since the human being discovered his mortality, he has been trying to be immortal. The condition of being exempt from death or destruction has been subject of study of different spheres; from religion and philosophy to science “the concept of living in a physical or spiritual form for an infinite or inconceivably vast length of time”* is a phenomenon which is still not known for certain to be achievable.

Thesis:

As many other issues that have been subject of fascination to mankind, immortality has been present in literature, and "The Picture of Dorian Gray" can certainly be considered an example (of it?). In this Oscar Wilde's novel, concepts of immortality and death are tied to concepts of aesthetics.
The purpose of this paper is to analyse the two-sided answer to the querie on immortality provided in “The Picture of Dorian Gray”

Conclusion:

...different manners in which immortality is fostered throughout "The Picture of Dorian Gray”. Both Dorian Gray and Basil Hallward try to achieve immortality through the portrait, though in not the same way; Dorian (wants) it to be the recipient of his own ageing and, therefore, he could live eternally, while Basil, as any other artist, considers artwork as the means of living forever.

A nice place to live in...

Colourful Class...

A couple of classes ago, our teacher Pilar asked us to find a gap in the story "The Colourful Life of Calum McCall" and give an oral presentation in groups in order to show our own interpretation to the rest of the class... I cannot even describe how amazing this class was!!! Each group found a different gap and related it to topics such as innocence, sadness, addictions, ambitions, etc. The interpretations were presented by using very interesting and varied extra material which included songs, stories, pictures and some activities
(--->We even created our pieces of art!<---)

"Days of Innocence" by Ednita Nazario (http://myportfolio-janeth.blogspot.com/2009/04/just-colours.html)

"Age of False Innocence" by Blind Guardian

"Paint it Black" by The Rolling Stones

"Colors" by DJ Taka

"She's a rainbow" by The Rolling Stones

"Cocaine" by Eric Clapton

It was fantastic to share our thoughts (and feelings as well) in a truly "multi-modality" class! Hope to do it again soon!!!

Calum Mc Call: From a colourful world to a colourless one

The innocence of children is, obviously, related to the amazement that simple things provoke on them. A bright blue sky or an afternoon sun are enough to make them enter an imaginary world where colours and shapes mix together giving life to the most unbelievable characters.

In the days of his youth, all the colours Calum has known as a small child disappear. He is growing up and losing his dreams as well. And when he tries asking his parents why everything that sorrounds him seems to be different, "elbows off the tables" and "sit up straight" are the answers he receives.
This amazement seems to reappear when Calum falls in love: certainly all or at least most of us experience the same feeling. I consider being in love the return of innocence: everything seems to be new and wonderful. You feel as if you were flying and treasure every moment as if it were the happiest of your life.

But when Calum's heart is broken, the amazement disappears again as well as colours and hope itself. Many of us may have experienced the same, feeling that one's whole world collapses and it is replaced by a black place that knows no end and where we cannot escape from. Sometimes we recovered, but some others we go on being afraid to fall in love again.

Years later, when his own son points to the sky and gurgles with pleasure, Calum can see nothing amazing, though, I think, his memory reminds him there is something he has lost: the ability to enjoy simple things.

His dreams are decolourized. Colours have no place in Calum's life anymore, responsabilities have taken over. Now, getting up early to reach boundless ambitions is all what matters.

After I read "The Colourful Life of Calum McCall", many questions arose, but there is one in particular which I would like you to (try to) answer:

Are we all eventually going to live in a colourless world?

Reading makes us fly...

What is reading and writing for me?

Reading is a door to a world of imagination, to new realities where you can be whoever you want, where nothing is too high to reach or too heavy to carry, where nobody or everybody can enter with you... where your soul and your mind play together.

Writing gives you the possibility of sharing your thoughts, your feelings, your dreams. For those who see writing as a terribly difficult activity, I think it is only a matter of time until they find the pleasure of expressing themselves freely. I am about to find it.
